Restorative
Cosmetic & Paramedical Tattoo
At Apollo Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Santa Monica, our cosmetic work is restorative and paramedical: areola and nipple restoration after mastectomy or reconstruction, scar camouflage, and fine corrective skin-tone tattooing. Every project begins with a private, unhurried consultation and a patch test, so you know exactly what to expect before anything is decided. This is careful, person-first work, and we treat it that way.

Paramedical tattooing uses the same fundamental craft as decorative tattooing — depositing pigment into the skin — but the goal is different. Instead of adding new artwork, the aim is to restore or soften the appearance of skin that has changed through surgery, injury, or healing. At Apollo, this means recreating the look of a natural areola after breast reconstruction, or helping a mature scar blend more quietly into the skin around it.
It also differs from beauty permanent makeup. Where beauty PMU focuses on enhancing facial features, restorative work is about returning a sense of normalcy and comfort to an area that has been through a lot. The mindset is gentle, patient, and led by you. If you are exploring decorative ideas instead, you can read about our tattoos and our skin-tone and realism work.
Areola & nipple restoration
After a mastectomy and breast reconstruction, many people choose areola and nipple restoration as a final, optional step. Using realistic 3D tattooing techniques, we work to recreate the natural color, shading, and sense of dimension of an areola, so the reconstructed area looks more complete to the eye. This is purely cosmetic, surface-level artistry — it does not restore sensation or perform any medical function.
Timing matters. Areola restoration is typically done only after reconstruction is finished and the area is fully healed, and we ask that you coordinate the timing with your own surgeon or care team. We will never rush this. When you are ready, we color-match thoughtfully to your skin tone and to your wishes, and we plan for the look to settle and soften as it heals.
Scar camouflage
Scar camouflage is the careful blending of a healed scar toward the surrounding skin tone, so it draws less attention. This can apply to surgical scars, scars from injury, scars from self-harm recovery, and some stretch marks. We approach every one of these with dignity and zero judgment.
Honesty is part of the work: not every scar is a candidate, and results vary from person to person. Camouflage works best on mature, flat, fully healed scars whose color has stabilized. Raised, very dark, very light, or still-changing scars may not respond well, and skin tone, texture, and how your skin holds pigment all affect the outcome. We would rather tell you honestly at the consultation than promise something the skin cannot deliver.
Consultation & patch test — always first
Nothing begins without a conversation. Your private consultation is a calm, no-pressure space to talk through your goals, look at the area, and hear an honest assessment of what is and isn't realistic. We also perform a skin patch test — a tiny amount of pigment placed discreetly — to check for sensitivity before any larger session. During the consult we discuss color-matching to your individual skin tone, the likely number of sessions, and the full timeline.
Realistic expectations
Restorative tattooing is an art of approximation, not erasure. The goal is to soften and blend, not to make something disappear completely. Most projects take multiple sessions spaced weeks apart, because skin needs time to heal between visits and because building color gradually gives a more natural result.
- Scars must be fully healed and mature — usually at least 12 months old — before we tattoo them.
- Areola restoration follows the same patience: complete healing from reconstruction first.
- Color softens and changes as it heals, so the first session is a foundation, not the finish.
- Outcomes are individual; we plan honestly around your skin rather than a one-size promise.
Healing & aftercare basics
After each session, the area is freshly tattooed skin and needs gentle care. We provide simple written aftercare and walk you through it in person. In general: keep the area clean, follow the moisturizing guidance we give you, avoid soaking, swimming, and direct sun on the area while it heals, and let any flaking settle on its own. Healing colors will look more muted once the skin recovers, which is exactly why we build results across sessions and reassess together before adding more.
A clear, kind note on beauty PMU
So you arrive with the right expectations: Apollo does not offer microblading, powder brows, eyeliner, or lip blush. Our cosmetic services are restorative and paramedical only — areola restoration, scar camouflage, and fine corrective skin-tone work. If you are looking for brow or lip permanent makeup, a dedicated PMU specialist is the right fit, and we are always happy to point you in a sensible direction. When you are ready to talk through restorative work, you can book a private consultation with us.
