Here's the whole thing in one sentence: a bar has to be able to pass through the hood and then sit underneath it without pressing on what's below. Everything else about this piercing — the jewelry, the healing, whether we'll do it at all — comes out of whether that's true for you.
Testing it is undramatic. A lubricated cotton bud goes gently under the hood, and we watch how far the tissue lifts and how much room sits between the underside of the hood and the tissue beneath. It takes seconds, it doesn't hurt, and most people report it as less eventful than they'd braced for. What we're reading is clearance: enough, and the piercing works; not enough, and a bar would spend its life under pressure.
Why does pressure matter so much here? Because it's the difference between jewelry that rests and jewelry that pushes. A bar with room to sit is comfortable from the first week and gets forgotten. A bar wedged into a hood with no clearance is felt constantly, heals slowly, and is often blamed on the piercer's technique when the truth is that the anatomy never supported it.
Hood anatomy varies far more than any diagram implies. Some lift generously and hang loose. Some are tight against what's underneath. Some are deep enough for a bar but sit at an angle that would put the lower end in the wrong place. All of that is normal — there's no correct hood — and none of it is visible until somebody checks.
If the check says no, the usual answer is an HCH: the same hood, crossed horizontally instead. Different jewelry, different position, and it suits a shallower hood that won't take a vertical bar. So the honest framing is that the check decides which hood piercing you're having, not usually whether you're having one at all.

People arrive having read that a VCH does something. What's actually true is anatomical and narrow: the lower end of a curved bar rests against tissue that is nerve-rich, which is the reason the placement exists at all rather than an accident of fashion. That's the honest limit of what can be stated.
What can't be stated is what you'll experience. Reports vary enormously — some people describe a clear difference, some notice it only in certain circumstances, and some notice nothing much. Anatomy differs, jewelry sits differently, and people are simply different. Any studio promising you a specific outcome is selling rather than informing, and we'd rather be the studio that says so.
Two practical notes that do hold generally. The starter bar is oversized for swelling, so whatever it does or doesn't do in the first few weeks isn't representative — judge it after the downsize, when the bar is actually fitted. And the shape of the lower end changes how it sits, which is worth a conversation once you're healed rather than a decision made on day one.

The bar you leave with is not the bar you keep, and that is deliberate
The starter is cut longer than your measurement calls for. Swelling arrives within hours, and a bar fitted exactly right in the morning is a bar under real pressure by the evening — so the extra length is there to be used. For the first week or two it will feel slightly loose and look chunkier than you expected. Both of those are the jewelry doing its job.
Then the swelling goes, and that same extra length turns into a liability. A bar with slack shifts about in the channel, which keeps the tissue mildly irritated and gives the ends something to catch on. Nothing dramatic happens; it just never quite settles. That's the state a lot of people live with for months without realising there's a fix.
The fix is two minutes. We measure the settled anatomy, fit a shorter bar, and the piercing stops being something you're aware of. Because a VCH heals so quickly, this comes round sooner than on almost any other placement — which is exactly why it gets missed. We put the date in before you leave the room.
Ends are a later conversation. Once you're downsized and settled, the lower end can change shape and the top can become a gem or an opal. Solid gold only if you're going that route — plating wears through where anything rubs, and here something is always rubbing.
The hood check costs nothing, because it has to happen before anyone can say yes to the piercing. The fee follows it.

There is no headline number here on purpose. Whether a VCH is even the right piercing for you depends on a check that takes five seconds and can only be done in person, so quoting a figure first would be putting the price before the decision. Start to finish, this is a short appointment, and the part people dread is the shortest bit of it. Here is the actual order of events.
Sterile saline a couple of times a day, rinse soap off in the shower, and otherwise leave it alone. The people who make trouble for themselves here are the ones adding tea tree oil and antibacterial soap to a piercing that was healing perfectly well without them.
Cotton underwear, loose, changed daily. Skip baths, pools and hot tubs while it's fresh; showers are fine from the first day. Cycling is the activity that most reliably annoys a new VCH, so plan a few weeks off the saddle. And because this one heals so quickly, the real risk is the opposite of neglect — feeling fine at week two and resuming everything at once. Comfortable arrives well before healed.
Come back for the downsize when the swelling has gone. On a piercing this fast that window arrives sooner than people expect, and it's the single thing that most improves how a VCH feels to live with.

It takes a few seconds and it doesn't hurt — most people say it's less eventful than a smear test. What it tells us is whether a bar can pass through the hood cleanly and then sit there without pressing on anything. That single check is the difference between a VCH we'll do and one we won't.
Then we don't do it, and we say so straight away. A bar forced into a hood with no clearance sits under constant pressure, which is uncomfortable to wear and slow to settle. The usual alternative is an HCH, which crosses the hood horizontally and suits a shallower or differently-shaped hood. Being told no for a VCH is not the same as being told no for everything.

A few weeks minimum, then barrier protection for a good while after that. Because a VCH heals quickly, people tend to resume earlier than they should — comfortable is not the same as healed, and a channel that's still forming doesn't want somebody else's bacteria in it. Ask us at the appointment for a specific answer, and be gentler about it than you think you need to be for the first stretch.
That it's there. Most have seen them and won't blink. You don't normally need to take it out for a routine exam, though if you're having anything more involved done, ask the clinician and follow what they say rather than what we say. If it has to come out while it's still young, come back to us afterwards — a fresh channel can tighten up surprisingly fast.
Take it out. This is one of the more forgiving piercings to abandon — the channel closes on its own and the mark it leaves is usually hard to find. That's a real difference from the surface placements, where removal leaves something visible. Nobody will give you a hard time about it, and you can be re-pierced later if you want.
No, and don't do it that morning. Freshly shaved skin is covered in tiny openings, which is not what you want next to a new piercing. Shower, wear something loose and comfortable in cotton, eat beforehand, and skip alcohol the previous day. That's the whole preparation.
Quoted at the consultation, which is free. The hood check has to happen before anyone can say yes to the piercing anyway, so the two go together. Jewelry is priced separately from the piercing across the studio. You'll have a number in front of you before you commit to anything.
They aren't really alternatives, despite constantly being compared. A VCH passes through the hood, sits against sensitive tissue and heals in weeks. A Christina sits under the skin at the top of the cleft, is purely decorative, takes months and can migrate out. If you want the thing that heals easily and is positioned for sensation, it's the VCH. Read the Christina page before choosing that one.
