People assume a small tragus is a simpler job. It's the opposite: less tissue means less to hold jewelry stable, and a post that has nothing to grip is the one that migrates or ends up sitting at an angle.
A dense tragus swells more and takes longer to settle. We size the starter for the tragus you actually have rather than reaching for a standard length out of the drawer.
The flap sits at an angle over your canal, and the needle has to cross it squarely or the jewelry will lean. We look at your ear from in front and from the side before anything is marked.
Not as an afterthought at the end. If you wear in-ears eight hours a day for work, that's a genuine conflict with this piercing and you deserve to hear it before you pay, not after.

What it is, why it arrives then, and the one move that makes it worse
Here's the pattern we see constantly. The piercing goes beautifully for a month. Then somewhere around week five or six a small firm lump appears beside it, and the person who has been doing everything right assumes they've done something wrong.
Usually they haven't. That lump is irritation tissue, and it's the piercing's response to being knocked repeatedly rather than to being infected. Week six is when it turns up because week six is roughly when people relax — they go back to sleeping on that side, they start wearing their earbuds again, they stop being careful pulling a jumper off. The tissue has been tolerating small insults for a while and finally objects.
What helps: work out what's hitting it and stop that. Warm saline compresses. Patience, because these resolve slowly and unspectacularly. What makes it worse: taking the jewelry out to "let it breathe", which closes the outer opening over a channel that's still angry; changing to a heavier or larger end; and picking at it. If it's growing, hot, or discharging thick fluid, that's different — come in or see a doctor.

There isn't much room to work with here, which is exactly why the assessment is the longest part of the appointment and the piercing itself is the shortest. Five things happen, in this order.
Saline twice a day and otherwise leave it alone. That's the whole cleaning routine, and the only wrinkle specific to a tragus is drainage: shampoo, conditioner and shower water all run down past this exact spot on their way out of your ear. Rinse it properly at the end of a shower rather than letting product dry on it.
The rest is avoidance, and it's the hard part. No in-ear headphones. Phone on the other ear or on speaker. Sleep on the other side, and if you can't, a travel pillow with the hole in the middle is the trick people wish they'd known about. Six to twelve months is the honest range, and the ones that go past twelve are almost always the ones that got knocked repeatedly rather than the ones that were cleaned badly.
Book AppointmentSwelling around a small dense flap makes the whole side of your head feel tight. Some people notice sounds differently for a few days because there's a swollen lump beside their canal. Saline twice daily, hands off, no earbuds, and don't twist it to see if it still hurts.
Swelling settles and it stops being sore, which is exactly when people put the earbuds back in and undo four months of progress. Keep them out. Phone on the other ear, no pools, and don't touch the jewelry.
Six to twelve months is realistic. Once you're genuinely settled, in-ears become possible again, though a smaller tip or an over-ear pair remains kinder. This is also when a ring can be measured properly. Come in for the first change — it's an awkward angle to do on yourself.
A standard tragus is a walk-in job most days. We're open 8am to 8pm, seven days. Where it's worth booking is when the answer might not be a simple yes.

Common questions about tragus piercings in Los Angeles
Avoid in-ear earbuds during healing (6-12 months). After full healing, earbud use may be possible with caution, but some people find earbuds never work comfortably with tragus piercings. Consider this seriously before getting pierced.
Tragus piercings rate moderate on pain scales (5-7 out of 10). The cartilage is thick, so you'll feel pressure and possibly a "crunch." The pain is brief—lasting only seconds during the actual piercing.
The tragus is the small flap in front of your ear canal; the anti-tragus is the raised cartilage ridge above your earlobe, opposite the tragus. Both are cartilage piercings but in different locations.
Avoid sleeping on your tragus piercing during healing. Pressure causes irritation bumps and delays healing. Use a travel pillow with a hole for your ear if you're a restless sleeper.
