If you're shopping for a watercolor tattoo in Los Angeles, we'd rather have a real conversation than promise you the Instagram version. At Apollo, the sentence is the tattoo — the wash, the bloom, the splash are only how it looks. We sit down with you, ask what the piece is actually about, and then match the chair to the idea: David DaVinci for color portraits and painterly blends grounded in a fine arts background, Blue Mason when you want fine line structure threaded through the color so the piece still reads at year five.
We're a working studio at 2625 Main St in Santa Monica's Ocean Park neighborhood, open 8am–8pm seven days a week, with a $150 shop minimum for tattoo walk-ins. Bring a reference, bring a story, bring nothing but a feeling — we'll show you healed watercolor work in person so you know what saturated color, smart placement and steady aftercare actually look like a year out, not just the day you walk out the door.

Book AppointmentKeep bandage on for 2-4 hours. Gently wash with unscented soap. Apply thin layer of aftercare ointment. Colors may appear very vibrant initially.
Light peeling and flaking is normal—colors may look dull temporarily. Don't pick or scratch. Continue moisturizing. Avoid swimming and sun exposure.
Colors will settle and brighten as skin fully heals. Full healing takes 4-6 weeks. Continue sun protection to maintain color vibrancy long-term.
Every Apollo tattoo uses 100% vegan ink — Fusion, World Famous, and Dynamic brands. No animal products, no compromises on color or longevity.

Common questions about watercolor tattoos in Los Angeles
The honest answer: a poorly designed watercolor tattoo fades faster than other styles, but a well-designed one holds up nearly as well as any color piece. The difference is in technique. Soft pastels with no underlying structure fade fastest. Saturated colors with subtle internal structure, paired with quality pigment and proper aftercare, hold beautifully for years. Apollo designs watercolor for longevity, not for the Instagram moment — we'll show you healed work during consultation so you can see how our watercolor reads at year three, not just day one.
Not necessarily, but some black elements (subtle linework, stippling, or structural elements) can help watercolor tattoos maintain definition over time. We'll discuss options during your consultation at our Los Angeles studio to find the right balance for your design.
Saturated, vibrant colors hold better than pale pastels. Blues, purples, magentas, and oranges tend to age well. Very light colors may fade significantly. Our artists will recommend a color palette that will look beautiful both fresh and healed.
Yes. We adjust color palettes and saturation levels for different skin tones. Our Los Angeles artists have experience creating beautiful watercolor pieces on all skin types. During your consultation, we'll discuss which colors will show best on your skin.
Watercolor tattoos heal similarly to other styles — typically 2-3 weeks for initial healing, with full settling taking 4-6 weeks. Following proper aftercare is especially important for watercolor pieces to maintain vibrancy. We provide detailed aftercare instructions with every tattoo.
Three things in our control, and one in yours. Ours: we choose pigments with strong longevity, design with at least some subtle internal structure (even invisible) so the piece doesn't dissolve as colors soften, and avoid placing watercolor where it will be obliterated (hands, feet, fingers). Yours: aftercare for the first month is non-negotiable, and lifetime sun protection on the piece is the single biggest variable in how vibrant it stays at year five and ten. Sunscreen on tattoos is forever.
Watercolor shines on subjects that already feel painterly: florals (peonies, roses, wildflowers — the texture of petals reads beautifully in washes), abstract designs (color fields, splash effects, geometric color blocking), animals where you want a softer, dreamier interpretation (birds in flight, fish, butterflies, watercolor portraits of pets), and impressionistic landscapes. Subjects that need precise edges (text, mechanical objects, hyperrealism) are not what watercolor is for. We'll talk through what your idea would look like in watercolor versus other styles during consultation.
Yes, and it often produces the most striking results. Watercolor + fine line (a soft color wash with a fine-line botanical structure on top) is one of the most popular hybrid approaches at Apollo — it gives you the artistic feel of watercolor with the longevity-friendly structure of fine line. Watercolor + black and gray works for portraits or animals you want as the focal point against a colored background wash. Bring the idea; we'll show you whether it's been done before and what the long-term outcome looks like.
More often than traditional or blackwork, less often than people fear. Most watercolor pieces benefit from a touch-up around the 1-2 year mark to refresh the brightest highlights or saturate areas where the wash settled lighter than intended. After that, a touch-up every 5-7 years keeps the piece looking essentially fresh. Compare to traditional, which often needs no touch-ups for 15+ years — watercolor asks a little more maintenance for the painterly aesthetic. Most clients consider that fair.
Stable, lower-friction placements with limited direct sun exposure age watercolor best: outer upper arm, shoulder blade, upper back, outer thigh, and calf. Forearms and ribs work but require more aftercare diligence. Avoid: hands, fingers, feet, neck (constant sun), and the inside of the wrist. We'll never refuse a placement, but we'll always tell you what to expect long-term.
Marginally. The healing timeline is the same as any other tattoo (2-3 weeks initial, 4-6 weeks fully settled). Watercolor sometimes scabs or peels in a more visually dramatic way during weeks 1-2 because the colored areas are larger and more visible than tight line work. Resist the urge to pick — the underlying pigment settles fine if you leave it alone. We'll send you home with aftercare specific to your piece.
Apollo sits at 2625 Main St in Santa Monica, a block from the beach and easy to reach from anywhere on the Westside. Here's roughly how long it takes to get to us for tattoos and piercings:
There's metered street parking on Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd, plus a public lot on 2nd Street a short walk away. We recommend giving yourself an extra 10 minutes to park on weekends — Main Street gets busy with the farmers market and beach traffic.
