Whether you want a classic eagle, a bold rose, a fierce panther, or custom traditional flash, our Santa Monica studio brings genuine American traditional tattooing to Los Angeles. This is the style that built the industry—and we do it right.
Book Your Traditional TattooAmerican Traditional (also called "Old School") is the foundational tattoo style.
Thick, heavy lines that define the design and ensure longevity. Traditional outlines are meant to be seen from across the room.
Classic traditional uses a restricted palette: black, red, green, yellow, and sometimes blue or brown. No gradients, no subtle shading—just solid color.
Traditional imagery draws from American tattoo history: eagles, roses, panthers, pin-ups, ships, anchors, daggers, skulls, and hearts with banners.
Developed by American tattoo pioneers in the early-to-mid 1900s, perfected in naval ports and spread through military culture.
Traditional tattooing isn't just nostalgia—it's proven engineering. Bold lines and solid colors age better than almost any other style.

Reserve your tattoo session and let Apollo confirm the right artist, timing, and scope.
Tattoo bookings are a reservation, not the full session length. After you book, we will follow up to confirm your design details, quote range, and the total time needed for your piece so everything fits your vision and the schedule.
Traditional tattooing is engineered for longevity.
Heavy outlines maintain definition even as skin ages and ink spreads microscopically over decades.
Packed solid color stays more vibrant than subtle gradients that can fade unevenly over time.
We can see 50+ year old traditional tattoos that still look good. The style has been tested by time.
The bold, simplified aesthetic accommodates natural skin changes better than hyper-detailed work.
Classic imagery never goes out of style. Traditional tattoos look as good today as they did in the 1950s.
Our Los Angeles artists understand traditional technique—proper depth, saturation, and line weight.

Common questions about traditional tattoos in Los Angeles
Absolutely. Traditional has experienced a major resurgence as people appreciate its timeless quality and proven longevity. It never really went away — it's the foundation of tattooing.
Better than almost any other style. Bold lines and solid colors hold up over decades. This is the most time-tested approach to tattooing.
Yes. While traditional often uses established imagery, our artists create custom designs in traditional style. Bring your ideas.
Same thing — different names. American Traditional, Old School, and Classic all refer to this bold, iconic style.
No. Black-only traditional (black and gray with bold lines) is a legitimate approach. Color is classic but not required.
Classic American Traditional follows a tight rule set: heavy black outlines, a limited palette of red/green/yellow/black, flat color fills with minimal shading, and an iconic subject library (eagles, anchors, daggers, pin-ups, roses). Neo-traditional keeps the bold line work and saturated color but opens the rules — broader palette, more detailed subjects, ornamental flourishes, and dimensional shading. Both age well thanks to the heavy line foundation. We do both; during consultation we'll match the approach to what you're imagining.
Three reasons. First, the heavy outlines act as a containment frame — even as color shifts and softens slightly over decades, the design stays readable. Second, solid color fills hold up dramatically better than gradients or fine shading, which blur first in any style. Third, traditional subjects were drawn for tattooing, not adapted from other art forms, so they're optimized for the medium. A well-done traditional piece looks essentially the same at year twenty as it did at year one — softer, but still itself.
Flash (pre-drawn designs displayed on the wall or in a book) is a beloved tradition, walk-in friendly, and often less expensive in time and money since the design work is done. Custom traditional gives you a piece that's yours alone, designed for your placement and your idea. Neither is wrong — flash carries weight because thousands of people have worn versions of those designs for a century, and custom carries weight because it's yours. Browse our flash sheets in studio, or come in with an idea and we'll design from scratch.
Sailor Jerry (Norman Collins, 1911-1973) was a Hawaiian tattooer whose flash and approach defined mid-century American Traditional. His style is the platonic ideal of traditional: clean heavy outlines, classic Americana subjects (hula girls, ships, eagles, swallows), and the established traditional palette. Most modern "American Traditional" you see traces directly back to Sailor Jerry's flash. We work in the Sailor Jerry tradition and have a deep love for the lineage; ask to see flash if you'd like a piece directly in this style.
The traditional canon is well-defined: roses (romantic, classic), eagles (American, freedom), anchors (stability, the sea), swallows (return home, a sailor's traveled distance), pin-up girls (beauty, mid-century iconography), daggers (loyalty, sometimes piercing a heart or rose), hearts (love, often banner-wrapped with a name), panthers (strength, climbing or crawling), and skulls (memento mori). Each subject can be reinterpreted endlessly in your own configuration. Bring an idea or we'll suggest one during consultation.
Traditional was designed for the upper arm, chest, back, and outer thigh — large stable canvases with room for bold composition. Sleeves work beautifully because traditional was made to flow across multiple panels with consistent visual language. Smaller traditional pieces (a single rose, a swallow) work on the forearm, calf, or shoulder. Avoid tiny traditional on hands or fingers — the heavy lines blur fastest there, and traditional needs its line weight to read correctly.
Traditional uses a bold, limited palette: a saturated red, a forest or kelly green, a sunshine yellow, a sky blue, sometimes a purple or pink, and solid black for outlines and shadow. Flat fills — no gradients, no painterly blending. The palette restraint is part of why traditional ages so well; saturated solid colors hold up where gradient color washes shift. If you want quieter color, ask about muted-traditional variations during consultation.
