A medium piece like a forearm botanical or a delicate script quote runs 2 to 3 hours. Larger fine line compositions (think a half-sleeve of stems, leaves, and flowers) are split across multiple sessions for both artist precision and your comfort. Sometimes, but not for the reason most people expect. The needle isn't dramatically lighter on the skin — what changes is the session length and the amount of skin trauma. A 45-minute fine line piece is much easier to sit through than a 4-hour bold traditional session. That said, certain placements (ribs, sternum, ankles, hands) still hurt regardless of the style. Fine line ages best on the upper arm, outer forearm, shoulder blade, upper back, calf, and thigh — areas with stable skin, less friction, and less direct sun. Placements to think twice about: fingers and hand tops (constant flex and rub), feet (footwear friction), the inside of the wrist (sun and movement), and the inner lip (won't last more than a few years regardless of style).
